Over 160 residents and visitors attended a preview exhibition of Cowal Open Studios weekend at the Creggan’s Inn, Strachur on Sunday– up substantially on last year’s figure. As one visitor from Glasgow said:  ‘I love art, painting and crafts. But it is sometimes difficult to tell from a brochure which of the studios I’d like to visit – some people may be embarrassed to go to a studio especially if it is in the artist’s home. This was a great opportunity for people to meet the artists and plan the next weekend’s trip.’

Many of the 40 artists who are opening their studios this coming weekend were on hand to let people know about the talks, demonstrations and exhibitions that will be available – as well as the additions to last year’s programme.

In addition to the opportunity of visiting artists’ and craft studios over the whole weekend, Strachur Memorial Hall will become the hub of extra events on Saturday – a day of arty, crafty and music fun for all the family. Headline features are:

  • Muldoons Picnic will run Harmony Singing Workshops
  • Potter Tom Butcher will be on hand to help you make your own pots
  • Folk group Rallion’s New CD will be launched in Argyll on Saturday night in Strachur

Whether you consider yourself a good singer, or just an ‘in bath crooner’, it sounds good to kick off the weekend with a singing workshop with Glasgow-based close harmony group, Muldoon’s Picnic (pictured left) and then join in a culinary and creative feast for the afternoon.

Tom butcher pottery

You can make your own piece of pottery with Arrochar potter Tom Butcher (item pictured above) – although your results may not be as refined as his, but potting is great fun and highly therapeutic.

You will be able to see felting demonstrations and watch a textile crafter at work, releasing your inner creativity with some hands on crafting. There will be loads of free crafting supplies on which to unleash your imagination.

Sue Prescott will be on hand to help kids (aged very young to 80) make things in wool, paper and card- lots of interactive creative stuff will be laid on.

Throughout the afternoon there will be a ready supply of first class snacks and cakes for sale with all proceeds going to the Strachur Memorial Hall fund.

At the evening concert you have the change to hear the Argyll launch of a new CD from Rallion, which has just caught the attention of central belt reviewers: ‘a dazzling display of musicality by the Scotland-based traditional folk quartet.  The members of Rallion are prolific performers and the skills honed on stages around the world shine on this recording. One For Sorrow has a deliciously exciting feel. All of the members of Rallion are multi-instrumentalists, lending an incredible depth and texture to each piece. A brilliant album that will leave you hungering for more.’
